Understanding the Big Picture

Merius Oy wanted to create a visual platform for its large-scale industrial clients, which could achieve common understanding and better decision-making for more sustainable plant solutions. Conventional methods of presenting paper-based information at in-person meetings made it difficult to understand the big picture, and necessitated on-site visits to get all stakeholders involved and up to speed. With usability of and access to engineering project data and information limited to a specific scope and a relatively small number of project engineers, they initiated the development of the Merius Oy Smart Mill service to help clients visualize their factories and environments for daily operations and future investments. This development required generating large datasets in an online environment that all stakeholders could access and manipulate without much technical expertise.

Visual Solutions, Streamlined Accessibility

To create a service where data could be shared and utilized beyond a particular project and its participants, Merius Oy sought to create a digital context to visualize engineering solutions through captured 3D data to make them fully understandable in context, including their effects on a plant’s future operations. They wanted to provide a platform that streamlined accessibility among all stakeholders to achieve a common understanding, make more informed decisions, and work toward a common goal for more sustainable plant solutions. However, the process of creating 3D reality meshes and integrating them with design models in 3D digital environments resulted in large, multi-sourced data sets that required several different software applications and multiple laborious steps. To accommodate the file sizes and visualize engineering work undertaken within the captured reality by all stakeholders, regardless of technical proficiency, Merius Oy needed flexible, open, and user-friendly technology.

Bentley Applications Provide an Open Platform

They chose ContextCapture to create the 3D reality meshes and OpenCities Planner as the digital platform to implement the Merius Oy Smart Mill service. Using Bentley’s interoperable applications, they incorporated 3D digital environments from drone imagery and terrestrial laser scanning data to create an online digital twin to make the big picture visible and understandable to clients. The flexibility of OpenCities Planner integrates updated meshes and design models in numerous formats into a cloud-based environment for visualization of real-time process information. Having an open, integrated visual platform, their clients can now problem-solve virtually and see potential future solutions via the digital reality mesh, taking conceptioneering, constructioneering, and optioneering to a new level.

Using Bentley’s reality modeling and digital twin planning and visualization applications, Merius Oy optimized their internal processes, reducing the time needed to create 3D reality meshes for its web-based Smart Mill client service by 40%. Having captured visual realities available to all stakeholders improves understanding and provides everyone with a voice, resulting in more informed decision-making and better solutions, saving clients up to 20% in project costs. With the ability to clearly visualize the proposed design alternatives, decisions are made 70% faster compared to the traditional process of meeting and examining paper-based presentations. The smart service makes all 3D digital information accessible online, which alone is estimated to save one work day per month, equivalent to EUR 40,000 for 10 users annually.
