Bridge Link Helps Boost Economic Development

The Taihong Yangtze River Bridge is part of a new highway network between the Nanchuan district and Liangjiang New Area, and is designed to reduce travel time and boost economic development in China’s Southwest Chongqing municipality. At 1,436 meters in length, the CNY 900 million construction project includes a two-way, six-lane roadway and an 808-meter, steel-beam suspension bridge. In addition, the complex nature of the bridge structure is compounded by site’s complicated terrain, technical challenges, and coordination issues among the large project team. With China Railway Changjiang Transport Design Group’s (CRCTDG) experience with bridge design, they understand that engineering construction errors are irreversible, and can lead to a loss of resources and safety risks. Working with Guizhou Communications Construction Group and Guizhou Bridge Construction Group, they had to determine how they could use the engineering information to increase the performance, quality, safety, and scheduling of each stage of the lifecycle.

Establishing a Digital Context

CRCTDG was tasked with providing digital design and a 3D construction simulation of the bridge. They recognized that traditional paper-based data exchange and construction methods would not be sufficient to achieve the accuracy necessary to avoid costly mistakes and preserve public safety. They wanted to explore how, by deploying BIM methodologies and reality modeling applications, they could enable intelligent information management and ensure a high level of precision and quality. However, they first had to determine how they could resolve their data collection, integration, and collaboration challenges. They decided that incorporating 3D laser scanning into BIM workflows would help them overcome software incompatibility, simulate their construction processes, and provide a digital foundation for lifecycle operations maintenance and management.

Finding Success with Bentley Applications

CRCTDG selected ContextCapture to process unmanned aerial survey data and establish a highly precise 3D model. They also used the application to create a terrain model of the bridge site, display contours in the form of lines or triangular meshes, and produce effective elevation and slope analysis. The use of high-precision orthophoto maps, point clouds, or reality scanning technologies generated terrain models of the bridge site and greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of the work. MicroStation was used to streamline and integrate models from multiple software applications, providing a single data source throughout the entire project lifecycle. Using Bentley’s open applications, CRCTDG established digital workflows and a construction management platform that eliminated the information silos of traditional construction methods. Leveraging digital DNA in a connected data environment, they combined construction process data with the BIM model, achieving high-precision construction quality control and creating an intelligent bridge model that can be used throughout operations and maintenance management.

Digitalizing Construction Delivers Savings

With Bentley’s open reality modeling applications, CRCTDG improved design efficiency and reduced bridge design time by 300 hours, saving CNY 500,000. By establishing collaborative digital workflows and a library of components, they completed the bridge design 30 days ahead of schedule. Working in a digitally simulated construction environment, they improved on-site construction management, saving nearly CNY 1.8 million in management costs and shortening the construction period by 47 days. Using the 3D model helped them clearly communicate the development process and manage engineering information throughout the entire project lifecycle, ensuring quality and safety. CRCTDG’s project lays the foundation for the intelligent construction of large steel bridges and will be used to promote industrialization of the bridge infrastructure industry throughout Chongqing.
