Project

When PT. Wijaya Karya (WIKA) assumed design duties for the Design and Build Project Harbour Road 2 in North Jakarta, Indonesia, budgeted at USD 530 million, the project team quickly realized that 2D design methods would not deliver the large and complex 8.95-kilometer toll road development on time and under budget. Due to limited space, heavy traffic, underground pipelines, and numerous intersection points, the development will include a 3.95-kilometer double-decker bridge along the Ancol River, which would become the longest double-decker bridge in the world. Additionally, the Indonesian government wanted to avoid placing piers in the river wherever possible to lessen the impact on the environment and ship traffic, and the project had to be completed by the start of the FIFA 2021 U-20 World Cup to facilitate access to the nearby stadium.

Solution

To design such a complex road system in a short amount of time, WIKA transitioned from its traditional 2D design methods and adopted 3D BIM methodology. The organization used unmanned aerial vehicles to photograph 166 hectares of land and produce a reality mesh. WIKA established a connected data environment that allowed designers to determine what features were necessary and to iterate component positioning. Through soil analysis, WIKA reduced the risk of piers settling along the riverbanks. The design work included a 4D model of the construction process, including the movement of heavy equipment in a tight area.

Outcome

By iterating the design, WIKA avoided performing 1,600 meters of costly foundation work, which reduced design time by 25 days. Switching to a BIM methodology improved bridge modeling efficiency by 40%, saving 10% of the construction budget. The ability to visualize the project using BIM applications helped the team detect 85 potential clashes, which could have caused USD 60 million in cost overruns and delayed the project by up to four months. WIKA finished the design in four months, compared to the estimated seven months it would have taken using 2D design.

Software

WIKA used captured images to create a reality mesh within ContextCapture. OpenRoads helped WIKA review the alignment of the main road, ramps, and approaching structures, while OpenBridge allowed the company to iterate pier positions and heights based on real-world conditions. Throughout the process, Navigator facilitated communication and collaboration between teams and stakeholders, and allowed designers to access running costs and project data from the office, remotely, or in the field. In addition, 4D construction modeling in SYNCHRO helped project engineers determine work schedules, estimate costs, manage supply chains, and analyze progress to ensure the project will be completed on time and within the budget.
