Project Summary


Project
The Hong Kong Science Park (HKSP) digital campus initiative will facilitate management of the technology park, including property development, facilities, leasing, transportation, and waste and energy. Hong Kong Science Technology Parks Corporation & Chain Technology worked together to provide hybrid modeling solutions to visualize, simulate, analyze, and manage all collected information. The USD 7 billion project required many smart devices to survey and collect the necessary data, and reality modeling and BIM applications created an accurate, georeferenced 3D map for the foundation of HKSP’s digital campus management platform.

Solution
The project team used ContextCapture to generate a 3D reality mesh of the campus and MicroStation® for BIM modeling and analysis of the buildings and supporting infrastructure. OpenCities™ Map (formerly Bentley Map) provided the location intelligence to georeference the models and data. The interoperability of Bentley technology facilitated the integration of 3D models, reality meshes, and a wide range of data in different formats to develop a centralized, connected data environment with data management and artificial intelligence.

Outcome
Using unmanned aerial vehicles and ContextCapture for developing areas of the campus saved 15 percent in costs for site inspections and construction monitoring. Bentley’s reality modeling and BIM applications optimized simulation of the existing environment and future building design; combined with campus IoT devices, the software extended simulation capabilities of the cloud-based management platform to achieve a return on investment of 25 percent. Having an integrated technology solution increased efficiency in project planning, design, and implementation, reduced remedial works, and enhanced decision making for HKSP’s digital campus initiative.

Software
The organization optimized reality modeling to create a digital twin of the developing campus with ContextCapture, and OpenCities Map facilitated the production of an accurate, georeferenced 3D map of the models and data. MicroStation provided a comprehensive modeling environment capable of processing big data with georeferenced features. The clash detection capabilities in Bentley’s modeling applications ensured that the 3D models fit within the physical environment. Bentley’s interoperable technology optimized management, simulation, and visualization of the HKSP data. The software solution enables integration of construction modeling technologies with smart technologies to promote smart living.
