Project Summary

Project

Burns & McDonnell is a top design, engineering, and construction management firm. With its headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, the firm plans, designs, permits, constructs, and manages facilities for clients world-wide. As a global provider of engineering services, Burns & McDonnell has used ProjectWise to manage projects across its 25 world-wide offices for the past seven years. With the goal of making its operations more efficient and agile, the firm issued an IT mandate to move all business and operations systems—such as Office 365 and ProjectWise—to cloud hosting.

Solution

Working with Bentley’s Managed Services group, Burns & McDonnell began the process for its ProjectWise migration by creating a test data source in a cloud-hosted environment. One of the goals of the initial testing was to confirm that the cloud-hosted implementation of ProjectWise could accommodate the use of specific engineering applications that the firm’s global practice groups used every day.

Outcome

In early 2017, the firm launched its first live, cloud-hosted ProjectWise repository for its Transmission and Distribution global practice group. After the success of that first migration, the firm began moving the data from the remaining practice groups to cloud-hosting. As of April 2018, all of Burns & McDonnell’s 11 global practice groups—such as their power group—have moved from their on-premises projects to ProjectWise’s cloud repositories. The firm has over three terabytes of cloud-hosted data which is being used to deliver over 500 current projects with over 4,500 internal users and nearly 600 external users. A key benefit that Burns & McDonnell received from moving to cloud hosting was having Bentley take over responsibility for managing the ProjectWise system. Transferring the system maintenance responsibility to Bentley has also yielded IT overhead cost savings, saving about USD 200,000 per year.

Software

ProjectWise CONNECT Edition was used to provide cloud hosting for Burns & McDonnell’s data from its 11 global practice groups. ProjectWise Share is currently being used to easily exchange files and the firm plans to soon implement ProjectWise Deliverables Management. ProjectWise CONNECT Edition also provides Bentley’s Managed Services group, which gives Bentley the responsibility of managing the ProjectWise system.

Project Playbook: ProjectWise

Outcome/Facts
  • Burns & McDonnell moved 11 global practice groups to ProjectWise cloud repositories.
  • By having Bentley manage the ProjectWise system in the cloud, internal IT overhead costs were reduced by one full-time employee’s work hours, saving about USD 200,000 per year.
  • The firm now has over three terabytes of cloud-hosted data, delivering over 500 current projects with over 4,500 internal users and nearly 600 external users.
Quote:
  • “We wanted all things that could be cloud-hosted to be moved to the cloud. The goal was to reduce on-premises server and storage footprints, and offload the responsibility and cost of maintaining on-premises software and hardware. So, we started to look at moving to ProjectWise CONNECT Edition initially for its cloud-hosting capabilities.”
