Project
Guangdong Research Institute of Water Resource and Hydropower was retained to plan and design the Pearl River Delta Water Resources Allocation project, which is expected to resolve water shortage issues and improve water supply to four urban communities in the Guangdong province of China. The CNY 34.7 billion water conservation and supply initiative includes 114.9 kilometers of underground water lines and extra-long shield tunnels intersecting through farmlands, residential areas, and natural reserves. The location of the water lines and shield tunnels made designing and constructing the infrastructure extremely difficult. To accommodate the engineering challenges with minimal impact to the communities and surrounding environment, the project team needed integrated BIM and reality modeling applications.

Solution
Using ContextCapture and LumenRT, the team generated 3D reality meshes of the planned locations and produced quick animations that provided stakeholders with an intuitive understanding of the project. The team integrated Bentley BIM and analysis software to model the construction sites, excavation, roads, and hydraulic structures, and to perform construction simulation. ProjectWise was used as the collaborative platform for all disciplines to work simultaneously in real time. The flexibility and interoperability of Bentley software accelerated accurate information sharing and optimized project deliverables.

Outcome
The use of Bentley applications reduced design time by 1,500 hours and saved nearly CNY 250,000 in design costs. With enhanced collaboration and streamlined workflows, the multi-discipline project team delivered the project 23 days ahead of schedule. Leveraging Bentley software reduced errors, improved efficiencies, and optimized decision making to minimize impact of construction on the surrounding environment and land acquisition disputes.

Software
Guangdong Research Institute of Water Resource and Hydropower used ContextCapture to produce 3D reality meshes from photos of the planned waterline locations. The models were refined with Descartes and LumenRT and presented as visual animations to improve stakeholder understanding of the project. AECOsim Building Designer, working as the BIM platform, eliminated the need for data conversion between the design departments and improved overall design accuracy while ProjectWise integrated workflows. The team also used Navigator for clash detection during the detailed design phase. Leveraging Bentley technology for geo-coordination, design, and reality modeling optimized project delivery and enabled the team to package 3D models, 2D drawings, and documents into iModel format for more efficient construction management.
