Project

The Guizhou Highway Bureau contracted with Guizhou Transportation Planning Survey & Design Academy to design and build the new CNY 1.2 billion Pingtang Bridge, which will extend 2,135 meters to carry the Guizhou Ping-Luo Expressway across Caodu River Canyon in the Qiannan region of Guizhou Province, China. The constraints of this specialized construction required designers to ensure structural system stiffness, control fatigue stress, and meet cable bearing pressure requirements at the top of the towers, all while preserving the overall visual effect of the bridge.

Solution

The project team selected a tri-tower support system. To determine the optimal stay cable layout and the structural support system, designers used RM Bridge for modeling and analysis. Using the insights gained allowed the Guizhou team to come up with an efficient configuration of tower columns and cable geometry for improved structural stiffness and cable bearing pressures.

Outcome

Guizhou Transportation Planning Survey & Design Academy completed the design on time, and construction is currently underway. Once completed, the resulting tri-tower cable-stayed bridge will feature the world’s tallest reinforced concrete bridge tower, with a main tower height of 328 meters. This interconnection of Yinlong and Lanhai national expressway will shuttle time between the canyon by at least one hour, improving the quality of life for residents in the area.

The efficiencies gained from RM Bridge reduced the cost of design labor by 240 hours, resulting in a savings of CNY 60,000 in labor costs. In addition, efficient utilization of TCL script file capabilities in RM Bridge greatly reduced modeling and post-processing time. RM Bridge will also play a key role in ensuring safety during construction.
