    FUT-Sweco/TYPSA

    Metro Extension in Stockholm

    Stockholm, Sweden

Project Summary

Project

As part of this SEK 25.7 billion Stockholm Metro extension to include approximately 20 kilometers of track and 10 new stations, JV Sweco/TYPSA is designing the section between Nacka and Söderort using a whole lifecycle BIM approach. The scope of work involves technical designs, railway plans, and an environmental impact report for 11 kilometers of tracks and tunnels, and seven new stations. Upon completion in 2025, the extension will meet regional goals for public transport capacity while improving journey times.

Solution

FUT-Sweco/TYPSA deployed 700 consultants in seven countries to work on this megaproject. Using Bentley applications, the JV team built templates to ensure that designers work within the same integrated workflow regardless of their locations or disciplines. ProjectWise facilitates a collaborative 3D design process among the client (FUT), designer, and contractor by providing a customized project information management system that serves as a single source of truth.

Outcome

The integrated design process enables the JV team to apply BIM concepts to design, production, 4D planning, and 5D cost estimation with powerful results. The efficiency of the BIM approach improves design quality, reduces information loss throughout the project lifecycle, and lowers design and production costs. The benefits carry forward when the as-built federated BIM models are integrated with the client’s facility management system.

Software

The complete BIM solution includes AECOsim Building Designer, ContextCapture, Descartes, gINT, InRoads, Bentley LumenRT, Bentley Map, MicroStation, Navigator, OpenRoads, ProjectWise, and Promis.e. ProjectWise provides a connected data environment for project-wide collaboration and a streamlined approvals process. The JV team uses ContextCapture to visualize new designs within the context of an interactive 3D city model. Reality models produced with Bentley LumenRT communicate the designs to the client and external parties.

Outcome/Facts
  • Applying the BIM methodology to 3D object-based design enables accurate planning and cost estimation, reducing the costs of design and production.
  • Using ProjectWise as the connected data environment ensures all design, coordination, and review is done on current versions of the models, which reduces the cost of project delivery.
  • The JV team uses PowerCivil for Sweden to create the tunnels using dynamic templates with parametric constraints—a process that takes one-tenth the time of manual methods.
Quote:
  • Bentley solutions support our integrated design process between all disciplines, which helps us to control our work to ensure quality in this megaproject. The use of a connected data environment managed by ProjectWise has been key to improving the overall design process, enabling the integration of multi-discipline teams that relate inside a collaborative system in which the project information is shared efficiently through controlled processes.
