Project

The CFL Gare Pont Rouge project sought to meet Luxembourg City’s goal of creating a car-free city center with the introduction of the country’s first funicular railway. Located in the Valley of Kirchberg, the new station will allow the population to commute to work while skipping the city’s congested central station, increasing convenience and saving time. The station is of utmost importance as all European institutions and main banks are in the area. Felgen & Associés Engineering SA was responsible for designing the heating and ventilation as well as the Wi-Fi access. This is essential for business commuters that need to use a high-class service between the business district and city.

Solution

With more than 10 years of experience using MicroStation, Felgen & Associés Engineering SA has developed large libraries of components allowing for the reuse of information. For this funicular project, the project team used libraries related to HVAC, sanitary design, and others developed for use with Tricad, which is interoperable with MicroStation. Integrating the extensive library of components ensured Felgen & Associés Engineering SA had everything predesigned prior to project execution, which drastically reduced project delivery time.

Outcome

The design phase started in 2012 and ended in 2015, and the station commissioning will take place at the end of 2017. This first-of-its-kind project for Luxembourg required Felgen & Associés Engineering SA to follow Swiss and German safety rules. MicroStation allowed the team to integrate these regulations and standards into their design. For example, Felgen compensated for trees that were cut down for this project, allowing for replanting elsewhere in Luxembourg. Additionally, to address environmental issues such as electrical waste, the design includes lights that will turn off automatically when the station is empty.

Software

By designing in MicroStation and exchanging the drawings in the right format, Felgen & Associés Engineering SA integrated the process of design and construction. Project collaboration increased by leveraging MicroStation’s interoperability which enabled the use and creation of both DWG and DGN data, allowing them to collaborate with the architects through i-models in the field. Interoperability made possible through MicroStation was ideal for this type of project. Utilizing MicroStation, changes made by the architects could be quickly processed, saving considerable time.
