Project

Phase III of the South Highway Connecting Line for the Jinsha River Highway-Railway Bridge in Yibin, China, involved the design of a 1,440-meter urban expressway from Jinshajiang Road to Yiqing Road. The over CNY 408 million project included a roadway with six lanes in each direction, two interchanges, and a 765-meter overbridge. China CMCU Engineering (CMCU) was tasked with the design of the Jinshajiang interchange and its six ramps, an interconnected bridge, and an over-bridge. With a multi-discipline design team to handle routing, bridges, and drainage, CMCU required a collaborative BIM solution to optimize information sharing and design quality.

 

Solution

CMCU used Bentley’s integrated modeling technology to implement a BIM methodology for the first time on a municipal roadway project. To achieve a collaborative, efficient design, the team worked in a unified design environment using PowerCivil for China, MicroStation, and Bentley Navigator, with ProjectWise as the common platform for data storage and information sharing. Using Bentley LumenRT, CMCU vividly demonstrated the design concept for each segment. Bentley’s interoperable BIM advancements ensured accurate integration of multi-discipline models and data integrity throughout the project for an optimal design solution.

 

Outcome

Bentley applications provided CMCU the design and visualization technology to help intuitively solve complex engineering problems, improving design quality while saving time and resources. The software automated design adjustments and calculations to accommodate different design parameters and constraints, reducing redundant design work by 40 percent and saving an estimated CNY 300,000 in costs. Using Bentley software optimized information sharing and optioneering throughout the design process to save 15 work days and reduce overall communication costs.

 

Software

Using ProjectWise, MicroStation, and Bentley Navigator supported synergetic design among the multi-discipline design team, enhancing design quality and efficiency. Navigator enabled the team to quickly identify collision points and detect abnormalities during the design stage, while Bentley Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) was instrumental in drainage design. The team used PowerCivil for China to create more than 15 multi-visual 3D cutaway display drawings and generated 3D fly-through videos using Bentley LumenRT to vividly demonstrate the design concept.
