    Digital Engineering Practice of Ningbo Yongxin Sluice and Pump Station

Project Summary


In response to a 2013 typhoon that flooded the Yongxin and Yongjiang rivers in Ningbo, China, Ningbo Raw Water Group Ltd commissioned a CNY 178 million emergency sluice pump. Constructed on the west side of the Yongxin River, the sluice pump was built with three pit tubular pumps capable of discharging 20 cubic meters per second. The sluice pump will mitigate future flood losses and improve urban infrastructure services.


As the EPC contractor, Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute used Bentley software for the full project lifecycle, from survey through operation, enabling the Institute to meet a demanding eight-month schedule—a process that would ordinarily take 24 months. Using Bentley BIM advancements in conjunction with AssetWise and ProjectWise, the Institute was able to easily access project information, facilitate collaboration, improve work efficiency, and promote resource sharing.  


The sluice and pump station will provide flood control in the event of a major flood. The Institute’s 3D design approach cut project delivery costs and reduced the design period by 33 percent. During construction, effective information management with ProjectWise and AssetWise improved project management efficiency. The BIM process enabled the Institute to deliver a digital engineering model containing AssetWise information that will improve operational efficiency and reduce operating costs for the owner.


Project design schemes and construction schemes were continuously compared and perfected using a BIM methodology to maximize flood control, optimize the utilization of natural resources, and reduce impacts on the environment. In addition to the applications previously mentioned, the Institute used the following Bentley products: AECOsim Building Designer, Bentley Map, Bentley Raceway and Cable Management, MicroStation, OpenPlant, Promis.e, and Bentley Substation.

  • Project information was effectively integrated through the AssetWise platform, which increased information access efficiency by 15 percent.
  • Bentley Pointools, Descartes, and GEOPAK Civil Engineering Suite modeled point-cloud data to visualize important structures, improving efficiency over 2D cut profiles by 50 percent.
  • Bentley Navigator’s clash detection reduced the error rate by 95 percent, thus reducing construction costs.
