The USD 2 billion Tom Bradley International Terminal Modernization Program will add approximately 500,000 square feet of new concourses and nearly 475,000 square feet of new terminal space adjacent to the existing international terminal and concourses at Los Angeles International Airport. The goals for the project included designing a structure that provides unobstructed circulation within architecture suited to Los Angeles’ coastal location.
Bentley solutions helped John A. Martin & Associates (JAMA) to achieve the architect’s expression in rhythmic, overlapping waves with a multi-planar, sloped, and curved roof. The complex structural system includes long-span steel special moment frames with non-orthogonal connections between beams and columns – a first for this unique design in California. RAM software allowed the evaluation, analysis, and design of beam sizes, column loads, framing schemes, and framing and loading configurations.
The model facilitated the design of a cost-effective structure by taking advantage of composite properties of beams and reviewing material takeoffs of steel framing. RAM Structural System’s ability to efficiently handle complex framing and loading configurations along with tracking column loads provided significant time and cost savings for the designs. Additional staff and design duration would have been required otherwise.
The application of a unique structural system to achieve a specific architectural gesture would not have been possible without integrating Bentley products into the structural design process. Bentley software, including RAM Structural System, RAM Concept and STAAD.Pro helped to overcome the obstacles associated with a structure of this size and complexity. Modeling in RAM allowed for quick updating and redesigning of the structure for new loads and floor areas, and RAM Structural System allowed for simultaneous review of beams, connections, and columns.
