    Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking Project

Project Summary

This three-year, USD 1.3 billion project to build an 80,000-barrel-per-stream-day residue fluid catalytic cracking unit was CPC’s first EPC project to adopt an electronic engineering document management system for the entire plant lifecycle – from project kick-off and design, through to reuse in operations and maintenance. Using plant component hierarchies such as process packages, equipment, process lines, and instruments, operations efficiency would be improved by enabling plant operators to locate related documents by tag number.

CPC outlined document management and control standards for the project with clearly defined project filing structures, including document attributes, codes, and component data linked with P&ID drawings. This structure was configured in ProjectWise, enabling the document management standards to be shared with CTCI, the EPC employed to deliver the project. In addition, collaboration capabilities facilitated the integration of a design team that was broadly distributed, and accelerated communication across project teams managing civil, equipment, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and construction tasks.

With the new system, CPC and CTCI could share and review documents seamlessly in the same collaboration environment. Automated grouping of technical and vendor documents with pre-populated attributes were set up for accurate and efficient transmittals. Tag numbers allowed project managers and engineers to easily search for target and related documents. All versions of project documents will be available in ProjectWise to streamline handover, and bring the plant up to capacity faster. As-built documents along with component data will support operations and maintenance throughout the lifecycle.

ProjectWise was selected as a solution that could provide both the desired collaboration capabilities, as well as engineering document management capabilities. ProjectWise connected distributed project teams from both CTC and CTCI with streamlined workflows, ensured information accuracy, and reduced project risk. The established document configuration hierarchy will both support the Kaohsiung plant through its operational lifecycle, and be applied to subsequent projects, increasing the initial return on software investment.
