Copenhagen will be the world's first carbon-neutral capital in 2025. The Copenhagen Climate Action Plan details how to restructure the energy supply and invest in solar cells. To realize this goal, the municipality will establish 30,000-square-meters of solar panels respectively onto existing and new buildings owned by the municipality for a total of 60,000-square-meters of solar panels. In order to achieve this, planners needed a way to assess the solar potential of existing buildings and find good locations for solar panels on buildings owned by the municipality.
City planners used Bentley software to create and analyze a 3D model of the city. The building information will be linked to a 2D city model, or building footprint. Bentley Map is used to visualize this information together with the solar exposure data. Solar exposure results are saved with 3D coordinates of triangles and diffuse insolation watts per square meter and then imported into Bentley Map to recreate the 3D triangles as XFM features with solar exposure values that are tested. The triangles are themed in Bentley Map and used to quickly locate acceptable buildings with good solar potential, providing viable solutions to the planning department.
The 3D city model of Copenhagen covers 74.4 square kilometers. It would have taken thousands of man hours to analyze this area manually – but with the solar exposure calculator in MicroStation, the city completed the analysis in a few weeks. Now planners can develop an accurate strategy for solar panels that will yield desired watts.
Solar exposure results are combined with existing building information by intersecting the 3D solar exposure triangles with 2D footprint of the buildings. This unique combination of data can be themed and visualized using Bentley Map, ensuring the high-quality analysis needed to find good locations for solar panels on acceptable buildings.
