KWISS — the Sewage Works Information System of the State Capital of Stuttgart — is a GIS especially adapted to the needs of sewage treatment plants. It combines laminar and spatial data with a vast stock of attributive information. It is based on Bentley’s sisNET and supplemented with a 3D graphics module, allowing the creation of arbitrary cross sections on any space and any area of the plants in Stuttgart, Germany.
Besides the comprehensive 3D CAD functionality offered by MicroStation, it was critical to implement a GIS flexible enough to adapt its data model according to the specific needs of the sewage power plant operators. The time required to gather graphic information on the sewage treatment plants for planning or construction works was reduced from days to several minutes.
