- Decide if pooled licensing with SELECT Server XM is for you
Perhaps you are using the previous SELECT Server to manage your technology portfolio and you are updating your applications or perhaps you are using licenses which are locked to specific computers and would prefer to increase the ROI of your investment through pooling. Either way, SELECT Server XM could be for you.

- Choose a hosted or deployed SELECT Server XM solution
With SELECT Server XM Edition it is no longer necessary for an organization to shoulder the burden of license server maintenance – unless of course they want to. Hence many organizations are now requesting that Bentley manages their license pools for them in its state-of-the-art data center.
Will you choose the hosted or deployed option?
You are at a fork in the road. Your next steps depend upon your decision to use the hosted service or to deploy your own server. The hosted service presents a significantly easier route to license pooling when compared to deploying your own server. This is detailed below:
Hosted SELECT Server
- Tell your account manager you want to use the hosted SELECT Server XM
Bentley will then:
- Change the account’s contract status to note move to hosted licensing
- Attach your site(s) license pools to the hosted SELECT Server in the CRM system
- Email the product Activation Key(s) for the requested Site(s) to the account’s system administrator
- Enable access to SELECT Server XM administration pages for Site administrator
Your SELECT Server XM is set up, configured and ready to use immediately.
- Replace your old SELECT Server with a SELECT Server Gateway service
If you have an existing deployed SELECT Server (for example: 2004 Edition), it should be deactivated within a reasonable amount of time and replaced with a SELECT Server Gateway service for pre-XM applications, as required. The gateway service is included with the latest SELECT Server XM download. Simply choose the Gateway Only option in the installer.
Your pre-XM applications will continue to operate without interruption and with all the benefits of the SELECT Server XM approach to pooled and trust licensing.
- Activate all XM applications against your hosted SELECT Server
Use the SELECT Server machine name (selectserver.bentley.com) and Site-specific product Activation Key provided by Bentley Technical Support.
All XM applications are now enabled for pooled and trust licensing.
Deployed SELECT Server
- Tell your account manager you want to deploy your own SELECT Server XM
Bentley will then:
- Change the account’s contract status to note deployment of SELECT Server XM Edition
- Create or upgrade a SELECT Server entry for the desired Site in the CRM system
- Issue a unique Serial Number and server Activation Key for the account’s SELECT Server
- Attach your site(s) license pool(s) to your SELECT Server
- E-mail the SELECT Server XM Serial Number and server Activation Key and the product Activation Key(s) for the requested Site(s) to the account’s system administrator
You are now ready to download the SELECT Server XM software.
- Download SELECT Server XM Edition installation package from SELECT Services online
System Administrator will install SELECT Server XM Edition on desired server with an established Internet connection. Please see the technical requirements for more information regarding installation.
Activate the SELECT Server by inputting the Serial Number and server Activation Key then download the license for the Site(s).
- Replace your old SELECT Server with a SELECT Server Gateway service
