Clients, Servers, Services, and Modules

The ProjectWise system includes desktop applications for visual collaboration and servers for connecting people and information across the distributed enterprise.

ProjectWise servers will cache data in multiple locations for fast access, manage and automate plotting and publishing, and connect with enterprise systems such as Microsoft Office SharePoint.

Bentley defines a “server” as a component requiring a license, and a “service” as a component that extends the capability of a server but does not necessarily require additional licensing or investment.

Servers (Purchased)

  • ProjectWise Integration Server (Web site)

The ProjectWise Integration Server is the central component of the Bentley ProjectWise System.

Most deployments require only one (1) ProjectWise Integration Server; however, large organizations may implement additional Integration Servers to provide redundancy. Multiple Integration Servers may be implemented when an organization has multiple locations that operate autonomously.

The ProjectWise Integration Server requires a Right to Run Server license to operate.

  • ProjectWise Caching Server

ProjectWise Caching Servers are used to store documents that are not stored on the ProjectWise Integration Server. ProjectWise Caching Servers are most often required to enhance performance for larger organization with multiple locations.

A ProjectWise Caching Server can be used to store the master copies of documents managed by ProjectWise and to manage cached copies of documents stored on other remote Caching Servers to provide LAN speed access to files that may be physically managed on those remote servers across the WAN.

A ProjectWise Caching Server Right to Run Server license is required.

  • ProjectWise Web Server

The ProjectWise Web Server is used to provide a web browser interface for ProjectWise users.

Web browser-based access for ProjectWise is intended for casual users who are in remote, possibly low-bandwidth locations. The ProjectWise Web Server connects to Microsoft SharePoint to extend ProjectWise managed content to users through a SharePoint portal.

ProjectWise Web Server requires a Right to Run Server license.

  • ProjectWise Publishing Server

ProjectWise Publishing Server is a dynamic publishing solution used to make drawings and models viewable for OnDemand viewing through a web browser.

ProjectWise Publishing Server can be purchased as a standalone server application or in conjunction and integrated with a ProjectWise Integration Server solution.

ProjectWise Publishing Server requires a Right to Run Server license and a ProjectWise Passport for each user session.

  • ProjectWise InterPlot Server (Web site)

ProjectWise InterPlot Server automates the production plotting and electronic archival process.

ProjectWise InterPlot Server can be used to author paper and digital media. ProjectWise InterPlot Server is designed to batch process entire projects (potentially hundreds of drawings) to paper or to immutable electronic formats like PDF.

ProjectWise InterPlot Server requires a Right to Run Server license.

  • Bentley Geospatial Server

The Geospatial Server provides an enterprise information management environment for organizations to quickly and easily find specific and content rich information.

The Geospatial Server enforces security, enables audit trail, messaging and strict workflow control by allowing collaboration among colleagues in a very organized way. Geospatial Server is also extendable for Enterprise Integration with ESRI, SAP, and others.

The Geospatial Server includes the ProjectWise Integration Server, ProjectWise Geospatial Management, ProjectWise Connector for Oracle, and ProjectWise InterPlot Server.

Desktop Applications/Clients (Licensed via a ProjectWise Passport

  • ProjectWise Explorer

ProjectWise Explorer is the primary desktop application for connecting with information stored on the ProjectWise Integration Server.

ProjectWise Explorer requires a ProjectWise Passport.

  • ProjectWise Navigator (Web site)

ProjectWise Navigator is a visual collaboration tool used for immersive project review and analysis to support design and construction management processes and to manage assets in real time.

ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer requires the use of a ProjectWise Passport.

  • ProjectWise Administrator

ProjectWise Administrator is the primary application used to administer the ProjectWise Integration Server.

ProjectWise Administrator is a Microsoft Management Console Snap-in that can be installed on each desktop so that a user could gain access to administrative functionality.

ProjectWise Administrator requires a ProjectWise Passport.

  • ProjectWise Web Explorer Lite Client

The ProjectWise Web Explorer Client is the primary web-based user interface for ProjectWise.

This user interface is enabled when the ProjectWise Web Server is installed and requires no software deployment on the client-side machine.

ProjectWise Web Explorer requires a ProjectWise Passport.

  • ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer (Web site)

ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer is the plot generation and submission component for ProjectWise InterPlot Server.

ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer includes the tools needed to compose, preview, and submit for plotting or renditioning MicroStation, AutoCAD, raster plots, and DPR files to a networked computer running ProjectWise InterPlot Server.

ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer can also be used to create intelligent 2D/3D PDF files from your CAD and Office documents without pre-requisiting ProjectWise Integration Server.

ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer requires the use of a ProjectWise Passport.

Services (No additional software cost)

  • ProjectWise Gateway Service

The ProjectWise Gateway Service is used to enable external ProjectWise Explorer clients (individuals located outside the company’s firewall) to reach a ProjectWise Integration Server residing on the secure local network inside the company’s firewall.

  • ProjectWise Indexing Service

ProjectWise Indexing Service uses the Microsoft Indexing Service to reduce the processing load on the ProjectWise Integration Server when creating full-text and component indexes.

  • ProjectWise User Synchronization Service

The ProjectWise User Synchronization Service is used to synchronize ProjectWise user and group accounts with Windows user and group accounts. This allows people to log in to ProjectWise using the same username and password that they use to log in to Windows.

  • ProjectWise Orchestration Framework Service

The ProjectWise Orchestration Framework Service provides underlying services for various ProjectWise functionality including Automation Service, Distribution Service, and the Document Processors (Full Text, Thumbnails, File Properties) used with the ProjectWise Integration Server.

  • ProjectWise Distribution Service

The ProjectWise Distribution Service is an optional module used to render and/or distribute documents at specified times or states within the ProjectWise environment.

This module is often included when the user wishes to automate the creation of electronic plots that may be used as a deliverable or archival document.

The Distribution Service can also be used to automate the copying of documents from one ProjectWise system to another along with some of the attributes of the document (via the delivered “ProjectWise Connector”).

With the addition of Enterprise Connectors (available through Bentley Professional Services), organizations that already have an existing enterprise level document management system in place (that is not designed to manage engineering drawings) can rendition engineering documents and distribute them into the enterprise system.

  • ProjectWise Automation Service

ProjectWise Automation Service enables server-side processing of documents, which in turn is accomplished through the configuration and use of document processors.

Document processors can be developed and configured to perform any number of document-related tasks.  One of the more common tasks performed is that of extracting information from a set of source documents and then importing the data into ProjectWise as components. As part of the process, a component index is typically generated for tracking the documents in which each component was found.

Three document processors are delivered in the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition release. They provide the capability to extract and import component-level information from Schematics-based drawings, TriForma-based models, and standard 2D and 3D DGN/DWG files. The Schematics and TriForma processors generally create components which are domain-specific (e.g., doors, windows, etc.), whereas the DGN/DWG processor creates components representing the basic graphics elements found in the files (e.g., cells, custom line styles, levels/layers, models etc.).

  • ProjectWise Publishing Gateway Service

The ProjectWise Publishing Gateway is an optional component that is only required when ProjectWise Publishing Server is to be integrated into a ProjectWise Integration Server solution.

This component provides communication between ProjectWise Publishing Server and ProjectWise Integration Server so that the Publishing Server is able to locate drawings and references within the ProjectWise repository.
