When KeySpan broadened the scope of its fiber network through the creation of its unregulated subsidiary, KeySpan Communications, it was apparent that existing network files consisting of separate AutoCAD drawings that lacked data intelligence would not be adequate to manage a commercialized growing network. Bentley communications software was chosen as the tool to design and manage this new network from the ground up. Today, KeySpan Communications fiber network consists of more than 66,000 fiber miles located throughout New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey.
With the Bentley software, KeySpan Communications could see all the equipment laid out before it was built. Bentley Inside Plant software allows it to see both the front and back elevation views, so the company knows where all the connections are located. All the data is stored in the databases that are created when designing the system. Queries can be made with instant results shown. These results can produce the map and pinpoint exact locations on these queries.
The data housed by the Bentley communications software is further utilized in-house. The ability to share the data provides information to various areas of the company including customer billing, revenue tracking, pole/conduit licensing, taxation, and network planning.
