Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM)

The longer a bridge exists, the greater the need for accurate information about it and the higher the cost penalty for poor interoperability.

Today, bridge information transfer is fragmented. There is a lack of interoperability between systems, and little reuse of data in major phases. Incomplete tools translate to insufficient data delivery. Studies say that up to 40 percent of engineering time can be wasted locating and verifying information.

What's the answer? Bridge information modeling or BrIM.

The bridge information model is an information definition of the bridge asset, co-created by many people using many technologies to answer broad-ranging needs. It can benefit many important practices, from project selection to construction, maintenance, and even rehabilitation. An information model can essentially serve as a window into the bridge asset.

The bridge information model can be built-to-purpose for a broad set of processes undertaken by the owner, the public, the engineering consultants and contractors – even financers and operators.

Information modeling brings:

  • Innovation and creativity
  • Improved problem solving
  • Better risk management
  • Impact over the life cycle of the asset

Benefits of BrIM

In the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry, the power of information modeling is best exemplified on large, complex projects. Where better than for bridges? Large bridges are the most complex and expensive of any transportation asset. Information modeling has been proven to deliver:

  • Faster total process
  • More design and construction per dollar
  • Shorter schedules with more concurrent workflows
  • Minimized cost overruns and conflicts
  • Reduced claims and litigation
  • Optimized processes

Bentley Commitment to BrIM

Bentley is dedicated to providing tools that accelerate bridge project delivery and enable informed decisions for operations and maintenance.

Our goal is to provide a complete set of integrated bridge solutions that not only support integrated design and construction activities, but enable users to create bridge information with reuse as an objective.
