Project Name:          Planning, Design and Construction of Peripheral Ring Road for Bangalore City

Category:
Civil Road Infrastructure

Category Description:
Road projects demonstrate innovative planning and design or intelligent operations and maintenance, to achieve an improved traveler experience and significant positive impact on the communities served.

The $185 million Peripheral Ring Road project encompasses the southern part of Bangalore City, India, connecting seven major radial roads consisting of three national highways, three state highways, and an expressway. The proposed 41-kilometer access-controlled peripheral road is a four-lane highway with a median of 11.4 meters and expandability to six lanes.

Using MXROAD, STAAD.Pro, MicroStation GeoGraphics, and other Bentley solutions, the firm was able to calculate alignment on virgin land with the least impact on the environment, satisfy the requirements of full access control, test alternatives for horizontal and vertical alignment quickly, generate drawings automatically, perform surface analysis, and the list goes on. Whether a complex interchange design, alignment design, profiles, cross sections, drainage design or earthwork volumes, the project team used one platform from design to construction. Savings from this approach totaled $11.9 million.
