Graphic Engineering Solutions & Services was appointed by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry of South Africa to visualize the proposed De Hoop Dam and re-routing of road R555. The region in which the dam is situated is a rapidly developing mining area with many opportunities for social and economic development.

The modeling encompassed eight million triangles for the digital terrain model. The available aerial photography of the area also had to be manipulated and merged into a single image, which, in turn, had to be resized without losing clarity on the draped model.

MicroStation, Bentley Descartes, GEOPAK, Bentley MX, and other Bentley products provided a comprehensive integrated solution to optimize the workflow and minimize the manipulation of the digital data to model the surrounding topography, the proposed dam, and the rerouted road.
