Project Objectives

  • Redesign a busy highway to shield the ancient monument from the sight and sounds of auto traffic
  • Keep the environmental impact of road improvements to a minimum

Fast Facts

  • As a foundation for detailed engineering, Mott MacDonald built an accurate digital model of the terrain—beginning with a topographical survey, overlaid with aerial photography.

The ancient monument of  Stonehenge is one of the world’s most important archaeological areas. A management plan has been developed to safeguard this World Heritage Site by reuniting the ancient stone circle and its  surrounding monuments with their natural landscape and providing a world-class visitor centre.

Key to the plan is the improvement of the A303, which aims to remove the visual impact and noise of traffic from the vicinity of the stones. International consultant Mott MacDonald is acting as the Highways Agency’s design advisors for the overall scheme, which includes 12.4 kilometres of dual carriageway improvement, a 2.1-kilometer tunnel where the road passes closest to Stonehenge, a flyover at Countess Roundabout, an improvement at Longbarrow Crossroads, and a bypass for the village of Winterbourne Stoke.

Bentley MX is the software at the sharp end of Mott MacDonald’s design input. Its design portfolio is impressive, featuring such landmark projects as the Channel Tunnel, the Lantau link in China (the world’s longest road and rail suspension bridge), the new red line for the LA Metro, and many large-scale UK highways projects carried out with Bentley MX.
