Innovation in Oil and Gas
When designing, constructing, managing, and operating upstream and downstream oil and gas production facilities, the management of crucial information throughout the lifecycle of an oil and gas facility is critical. This category covers a wide range of technological innovation in the oil and gas industry ranging from mapping the fields and preparing new drill-site locations to the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of gas processing plants, oil production facilities, and complex refineries.

Cianbro Constructors Motiva Crude Expansion Project Brewer, Maine, United States
In 2003, a paper mill that had operated in Brewer, Maine for more than 100 years closed its doors, leaving a visual and economic hole in the community. Cianbro Constructors revitalized the community by building a $110 million manufacturing facility that employs 500-plus people. The facility is designed to construct 54 modules to be used in the Port Arthur Texas Crude Expansion Project.
ConstructSim allowed Cianbro to visually communicate the project at all levels—from the media, engineers and production team to the construction crews themselves. The visuals were instrumental in getting buy-in from local communities, educating the public about the project, and showing trainees what they would be building, which allowed Cianbro to work more efficiently with fewer people.

BP Tangguh Project State of Papua, Indonesia
Located in Papua, New Guinea, the $5 billion Tangguh LNG facility will produce 7.6 million tons of gas annually. The project included gas production wells, platforms, transmission system, plant, marine facilities, and airfield. Information hand-over for the operations phase involved data from multiple EPC contractors in Japan and Indonesia, more than a dozen major subcontractors, and over 300 vendors on nearly 100,000 items of equipment.
To facilitate information management throughout the plant lifecycle, Bentley’s Professional Services teamed with BP project information managers to create an information hand-over specification. Project data went through a multi-stage validation before uploading, consolidation, and final checking in Data Quality Manager, which then fed the asset and maintenance management systems. Information is now available via a web interface for operations and maintenance. |

CNGS Engineering LAM-B Wellhead Platform Simferopol, Ukraine
The LAM-B fixed platform is located at the Jeytun oil field in the Caspian Sea off the coast of Turkmenistan. It is designed for oil production, preparation, and transportation to the offshore subsea pipelines. CNGS Engineering provided EPC services including project management, engineering design, fabrication of the support jacket and deck sections, and procurement of components including process equipment, and control and power supply systems.
MicroStation - along with proven project management methods and quality controls - allowed for completion of the project by a small number of design engineers. Professionals in process, instrumentation, steel structures, electrical systems, water drainage and sewage, life support, and safety systems worked on design simultaneously, leading to more efficient operations. The 3D platform model was then used to guide installation.
