Tube Lines

Tube Lines Realizes a Return Four Times Greater Than Its Initial Training Investment

The utilization of a Bentley training subscription to deliver the quantity and variety of learning identified within its training plan has provided Tube Lines with a cost-effective solution. The return on the initial training investment has been four-fold.

Tube Lines has a 30-year Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract with London Underground for the maintenance and upgrade of all the infrastructure on the Jubilee line, Northern line, and Piccadilly line. It also provides a number of services across the network, including the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Distribution Services, and Trans Plant. Tube Lines delivers a growing catalogue of safety and skills courses, as well as a competency
management consultancy.

Challenges

  • Tube Lines ensures that CAD users are competent in the use of the tools required to fulfill their job function. The firm sets expectations for a high standard of work, and the development of its staff is paramount to make sure that they are able to perform as efficiently as possible. Excellence through continuous improvement drives the need to train and maintain the skills required to support
    their needs.
  • A recent implementation of a complete CAD infrastructure system meant the staff needed upgrade training for the applications they use.

Solution

  • To ensure that CAD staff are provided with the appropriate training at the right time, all users undertake formal reviews twice a year to examine their training requirements. These reviews and the delivery requirements of the business are used to produce a coordinated training plan.
  • The initial implementation of the training plan prompted Tube Lines to procure a Bentley training subscription to deliver the variety of training the firm had identified.
  • Tube Lines has made full use of instructor-led distance learning and account-specific courses. The use of an instructor-led course provides an environment where users feel more comfortable as they are able to interact personally with the trainer to address their questions.
  • To support the ongoing requirements of the engineering department, all new CAD staff are required to attend MicroStation basic and/or upgrade training to ensure and reinforce their CAD competence.
  • To maintain the competence of existing CAD staff, they attend a variety of courses for Bentley Rail Track, MicroStation TriForma, ProjectWise specialist training, and administering MicroStation.

Results

  • The utilization of a training subscription provides Tube Lines with a cost-effective solution. The return on the initial training investment has been four-fold.
  • Focused training provides the CAD staff with the necessary knowledge to make full use of the products and gives them clear insight into the full capability of the application suite, enabling them to improve the quality of their deliverables.
  • Tube Lines expects the reuse of quality data generated by the Bentley applications to produce significant savings. Good data enables Tube Lines to implement a Building Information Model (BIM) and provides the firm with a single source of information, removing duplication and its associated problems. When commencing a new project, this single source will reduce or remove the requirements for re-surveying a site, including the associated costs and time delays.
  • Improvements in project implementation and delivery reduce unnecessary costs and improve the quality of the London Underground assets.
  • From the users’ perspective, planned training has increased both their knowledge and enthusiasm for the tools they use and has led them to actively investigate new opportunities for applying Bentley software to solve business needs.
