Indiana Department of Transportation

INDOT Makes Learning More Accessible With a Bentley Training Subscription

The Indiana DOT can have new employees start training from day one.

The Indiana Department of Transportation’s mission is to plan, build, maintain, and operate a superior transportation system enhancing safety, mobility, and economic growth throughout the state. It has been using Bentley products to create road designs and drawings for more than 10 years.

Challenges

  • The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) conducted an organization-wide update of MicroStation and the MXROAD family of civil design products.
  • INDOT also executed a unification project to combine its many workspaces and Bentley products into a single custom environment that would benefit both the users and the support staff.

Solution

  • INDOT implemented a discipline-specific, task-specific, and workflow-oriented approach to
    their training.
  • Staff attended Bentley Institute classes for version upgrades and for new employees with intense support for users at their workstations and on their projects immediately after classroom instruction.
  • INDOT held lunchtime seminars on software updates and workspace improvements.
  • The Bentley Institute provided training documentation to meet the needs of the department’s
    CAD users.

Results

  • The INDOT staff has become more efficient through training from the Bentley Institute.
  • Modeling and visualization skills improved, resulting in improved design plan quality, fewer changes, and lower construction costs.
  • The training subscription saved INDOT thousands of dollars due to the unlimited amount of training
    it allows.
  • OnDemand eLearning allows new employees to start training immediately. After a week, most mastered the standard functionality, and some moved into advanced techniques.
  • OnDemand eLearning also lets department employees across the state attend training without the time and expenses associated with traveling to the central office.
  • When an INDOT employee transfers to another job within the department, that person does not have to learn a new CAD environment.
