Lower Silesia, one of 16 administrative units in Poland, is the seat of local government for the region, performing both legislative and information management functions for its citizens and government departments. As spatial information became more abundant, managing and disseminating that data became a critical need. To satisfy it, Urzad Marszalkowski Woj. DolnoSlask made the decision to develop the Province Integrated Information System (DSIP).

The project, which began in 2000, now provides the region with information about municipal boundaries, road networks, natural features, and other geospatial data to support governmental decision making. The primary functions of the DSIP includes capturing, processing, analyzing, managing, transferring, updating, and publishing geospatial data.
