Project objective
Design rail line through the Himalayas to serve over 10 million people.

Fast Facts
Extends the Indian Rail Network to the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir

Cost: $2.5 billion (USD)

Rail track winds through mountainous terrain where one stretch of 142 kilometers has 118 bridges and 65 tunnels. It has an elevation change of one kilometer

Construction time was reduced by six months on one 12-kilometer section using MX

3D visualization reduced site visits when analyzing terrain for constructability

The new Kashmir Railway will add an additional 290 kilometers to the largest rail network in Asia, which already measures more than 64,000 route kilometers and carries more than 14,000 trains—including more than 8,000 passenger trains. The rail serves some 13 million passengers daily. The addition will connect the Himalayan states of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the railway network of Indian Railways.

According to RITES, work was streamlined by a combination of MXRAIL and MXROAD, supplemented by software tools that were developed in-house to deliver exceptional quality at a competitive price. When designing alignments, 3D visualizations of the terrain helped the designers avoid steep slopes, and to visualize cut/fill slopes and their protection. RITES’s use of MXRAIL and MXROAD on this $2.5 billion (USD) project saved them time and money on a critical project for the region.
