This presentation begins with the discussion of the fundamentals of the buckling phenomenon and conceptual difficulties encountered by the researcher to understand the buckling problem completely. The concept of unstable equilibrium will be discussed.
The Stardyne Advanced solver of STAAD is used to analyze a large number of problems that were solved theoretically in "Buckling Strength of Metal Structures" by Hans H. Bleich.
Finally, a very complex buckling problem of a strut 120 feet long used in Bechtel's Central Artery Project, Boston, is discussed and a step-by-step procedure to evaluate its buckling strength using STAAD is presented.
