A two-person team at Halcrow’s Gloucester office handled the design for a £250,000 upgrade to less than one kilometer of the A419/A417 route linking Cricklade and Lechlade. This is part of the £5 million Cotswold Water Park Eastern Spine Road project to rebuild and realign principal and rural roads, a significant element in Gloucestershire County Council’s Local Transport Plan. Halcrow’s part in the project is typical of the bread-and-butter work the company does for Gloucestershire County Council and others like it across the country.

The two designers finished in less than a day and a half, with help from Bentley MXURBAN, a 3D application for the complex engineering processes of rehabilitation works—from overlays within existing kerb lines to full reconstruction of roads and footways. Deflectograph operators took readings along the existing carriageway, and Halcrow designers entered the data into MXURBAN to see an instant appraisal of the pavement’s structural condition. The designers combined this with topographical survey data into a single model on which to base the design.
