Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd.

Training Is Key to the Wood Group’s Future Plans

The training program is seen as an ongoing project to consistently improve staff skills on projects and provide opportunities to better evaluate new products that could raise efficiency.

Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd. is an international leader in both marginal and field developments and in the life-of-field engineering. Its North Sea focus includes enhancing recovery from mature fields, designing and implementing major modification projects onshore and offshore, and participating in the development of a number of new and marginal fields, with a focus on collaboration and technological innovation.

Challenges

  • Wood Group's steady global expansion – more than 27,000 people in more than 46 countries – requires an increasing number of experienced engineering staff to cope with the expanding workload.
  • There is a skills shortage in engineering.
  • Wood Group wanted to attract new staff by offering them a path to improve their software skills and provide industry-recognized accreditation.
  • It wanted to give younger employees opportunities to advance within the organization.
  • Clearing time to attend training can be difficult for valuable staff on fast-track projects.

Solution

  • Wood Group embarked on a program to retain existing employees and attract new engineers and designers by offering staffers the opportunity to attend training.
  • The firm worked closely with Bentley to document the requirements of every staff member and analyze their existing skills. A plan was created to take each employee to his required level of expertise with Bentley products by taking advantage of a Bentley training subscription.
  • Wood Group recruited a dedicated training coordinator.
  • Senior management support has been a key factor in gaining acceptance for the training program.

Results

  • In the first year of the training subscription, Wood Group saw a drop in the support requirements for the key Bentley software products.
  • The Bentley training subscription provided a fixed budget for the year despite the constantly changing training requirements. Wood Group was able to demonstrate a clear financial benefit at the end of the
    first year.
  • Wood Group and Bentley are extending the training program to the firm's staff in various European locations. Much of the training will be accomplished using Bentley distance learning, which the company sees as crucial to maximizing training benefits for staff all over Europe while minimizing the traveling requirements and the time spent away from projects.
  • Staff are supported centrally and can integrate successfully with other offices on collaborative distributed projects.
  • Training is central to the firm's plans for future growth, individual staff contentment, and efficiency.
