Halff Cuts Time to Productivity 83 Percent With Learning From Bentley Institute

"The Bentley Institute has allowed our firm to efficiently achieve the level of training that is required for us to operate effectively at our current size as well as to build a solid foundation for future growth."

Halff Associates, Inc. is a diverse and multi-disciplined professional services firm. For more than half a century, Halff has provided innovative and cost-effective solutions in Texas and throughout the United States, offering full-service engineering, architecture, planning, interior design, landscape architecture, environmental, right of way, and surveying services.

Challenges

  • As a full-service organization, Halff doubled in size in the past five years. It needed to quickly train new hires to help them reach productivity.
  • The demand for instruction exceeded the firm’s in-house staff’s ability to provide, and the required expertise wasn’t always available.

Solution

  • The company informed its users about the availability of training and educated them about how to take advantage of all of the different types of learning. Halff used its intranet site to communicate scheduling and participation requirements.

Results

  • The learning initiative allowed Halff to stay competitive in the midst of its rapid growth by training
entry-level employees to do more advanced design and enabling the firm to embrace
    advanced technologies.
  • New employees historically took six months to become productive with MicroStation without any dedicated training. Now, new employees are expected to be productive after their first month.
  • Using a training subscription freed up 352 hours of staff time that could then be devoted to other
    CAD efforts.
  • Halff saw reduced project costs and thousands of dollars of savings in training costs.
  • Halff was able to develop its staff’s skills for using Bentley Building software in anticipation of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mandate requiring the use of BIM software on its projects.
