Posting Files to the Discussion Groups

Since some readers use low-speed Internet connections, the Bentley discussion groups do not permit the posting of large attachments over 4MB. Although files and data sets can provide a good way to communicate ideas, concepts, and issues, we recommend posting large or sensitive files via our secure FTP site instead. That said, please note the following:

  • The 4MB value is determined on our servers, so the size of the file/archive on your system may be different -- in some instances, less than 4MB.
  • To provide a sample data set that demonstrates a particular concept or is with regard to a specific issue, we recommend paring the data set down to the absolute minimum that still demonstrates the issue -- this really helps in any investigation. If it is not possible to minimize the data set or if the information is sensitive or confidential and not meant to be publicly accessible, we recommend uploading the file (or archived data set) to our secure ftp site and posting the name of the file you uploaded to ensure that we get the right file. More information on accessing Bentley's secure FTP site is in the Bentley Online Access TechNote under the FTP section.
  • If you want to attach a screen shot image to an article, DO NOT USE BMP FORMAT. We recommend using JPEG, GIF, or PNG formats when saving the file from a graphics program (i.e. Paint in Windows) as that significantly reduces the size of the image file on your hard disk, yet the resulting image remains clear enough to show what is necessary.
  • Although the Bentley discussion groups are monitored, we cannot check file attachments for viruses, so readers should be aware that they download posted files and attachments at their own risk.
