Data Management and Plant Design
With few new refineries being built, the main concern in refining is expanding capacity of existing facilities and updating these facilities to meet new environmental issues such as producing cleaner diesel fuel and reducing sulfur dioxide emission. Typically the refineries outsource their engineering work to EPCs who perform a "design-build" contract using the plant design system of their choice.
The Bentley process manufacturing solution helps these EPCs in their initial FEED work, in managing process data and in providing engineering data at handover in a format that refineries can use from a safety and maintenance perspective.
For front-end engineering, the Bentley solution deals with development of process design basis, preliminary process schematics, a conceptual plant layout and budgetary cost estimates. The plant design components of the solution addresses all of the major plant engineering and plant design activities associated with plant creation, namely logical schematics such as piping and instrumentation diagrams, control and wiring diagrams, and 3D plant models for the facility and construction quality drawings and quantity take-offs.
The Bentley solution addresses the interoperability necessary to exchange design data from a variety of plant design systems, while still maintaining continuity in the design process through the use of ISO15926. After handover, through the use of ProjectWise Lifecycle Server, operations and maintenance can make use of engineering data both from legacy documents and from the earlier designs and construction phase of design projects, giving rapid access to as-built and work-in-progress engineering data.
