Award-Winning Human-Lung-Cell Network, Modeled With the Help of GenerativeComponents, Was Featured on Cover of 'Science' Magazine

EXTON, Pa. – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for the infrastructure that sustains our world, today announced that Jenny Sabin and Peter Lloyd Jones, workshop leaders and speakers at the SmartGeometry 2010 Conference in Barcelona, taking place March 19-24, were recently recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation. Sabin, an architect, artist, and educator, in collaboration with cell and molecular biologist Peter Lloyd Jones, won the 2010 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge for her creation of a 3D web-like structure out of cable zip ties. The structure simulates the predicted network generated by human lung cells as they interact with an extracellular matrix. Sabin’s work, “Branching Morphogenesis,” was modeled with the help of GenerativeComponents, Bentley Systems’ generative design software, and featured on the Feb. 19 cover of Science magazine.

Sabin, a principal of Sabin+Jones LabStudio at the University of Pennsylvania, presented the design at last year’s SmartGeometry Conference in San Francisco. She and her team of architectural students, along with LabStudio associate Andrew Lucia, built the rules for the biological mesh-like structure with the help of GenerativeComponents. The students snapped more than 75,000 interconnected cable zip ties into place to create the 12-foot high, 15-foot wide structure.

“‘Branching Morphogenesis’ is one of the many examples of how parametric modeling can be used in new and interesting ways,” said Huw Roberts, Bentley global marketing director. “This project demonstrates how GenerativeComponents can be used to enable two schools, in this case architecture and medicine, to collaborate and visualize a structure before building it.”

Roberts continued, “I have no doubt that a number of the projects unveiled at the SmartGeometry 2010 Conference in Barcelona will be recognized by disciplines outside of architecture. To meet Jenny and Peter and see, firsthand, many more of these cool and unique projects created by imaginative practitioners, I highly recommend attending this year’s SmartGeometry Conference.”

The SmartGeometry 2010 Conference is the premier event focused on innovative design tools, technologies, and methodologies that allow and encourage new forms of architectural and structural expression. This year’s conference carries the theme “Working Prototypes.” For additional information about the conference and to register, visit www.SmartGeometryConference.com/2010.

About Sabin+Jones LabStudio

In 2007, Jenny E. Sabin and Peter Lloyd Jones initiated LabStudio, a hybrid research and design unit based within the Institute for Medicine & Engineering, the School of Design, and the Nonlinear Systems Organization at the University of Pennsylvania. Within the Sabin+Jones LabStudio, architects, mathematicians, materials scientists, and cell biologists are actively collaborating to develop, analyze and abstract dynamic, biological systems through the generation and design of new tools. These new approaches for modeling complexity and visualizing large datasets are subsequently applied to both architectural and biomedical research and design.
