Steven Downing

Workshop Tutor

Downing is one of the global CAD development leaders for Arup, responsible for a development team covering AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation and Bentley Structural. His own specialty is with the Bentley products, including GenerativeComponents, as a programmer and previously as a user in Arup's structural group in Sydney.

Downing also holds a part-time research position with RMIT University's Spatial Information Architecture Lab (SIAL), taking part in joint Arup and RMIT research into methods for delivering "digital architecture".  This three-year research program is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant, and is investigating the use of parametric modeling and programming within the realm of today's challenging projects.

A GC user since 2005, including building the GC model for Marina Bay Pedestrian Bridge, Downing's interests lie in programming GC (GCScript and C#/VB.Net), and exploring the use of GC (or similar tools) to create models for analysis purposes, starting with structural and then extending to multi-disc analysis.
