Roly Hudson
Workshop Tutor
Currently at the University of Bath, Hudson is writing his PhD Thesis: Applied Strategies for Parametric Design in Architecture. This aims to establish a detailed understanding of tasks, considerations and opportunities presented by the growing popularity of parametric design in contemporary architectural practice. These aims are achieved through establishing a foundation of appropriate design theory and relating this to contemporary thoughts and principles on parametric design. Additional review and analysis of published material describing the use of parametric methods in architectural and engineering practice define a current state of practice. Lastly, a series of case studies are documented and cross examined with regard to established theory and published practice. Based on this, intelligent strategies for parametric design are identified. Some of these have been tested in parametric training workshops for academics and professionals.
A key case study is Lansdowne Road Stadium (currently under construction) with HOK Sport and Buro Happold. Here a dynamic link between architectural geometry and structural roof geometry and engineering was developed. Close working relationships with the manufacturers were established to take full advantage of the architectural parametric model to assist an efficient manufacture and construction sequence.
