Earl Mark
Workshop Tutor
In an early version of GC, 2002, Mark programmed a Visual Studio application for two projects: one that controlled the G & M codes for a CNC mill machine and one that explored the variations in the vaults at Fountains Abbey. Today, he teaches with GC in a design studio and CAD class. However, his more novel use is in a course "Parametric Rapid Prototyping" based on a seven chapter text written with examples in GC. Student GC scripts animate variables as a method of analysis leading to CNC fabrication (using primitive movie image recording tools within GC).
Mark is an Associate Professor and Director of Infomation Techology/Chief Technology Officer at the School of Architecture, University of Virginia, and fomerly a Lecturer at the MIT Department of Architecture and Visiting Lecturer at ETH Zurich. He is affiliated with a small architectural practice. He has a Ph.D. in Architecture/Cog Sci. from Harvard, an M. Sc. from the MIT Media Lab, and a M. Arch. and a BA in Architecture/Math. At Computervision, he wrote software in perspective visualization, general building design, shipbuilding, terrain modeling, and HVAC. He is interested in formal design applications and animated methods of analysis.
