Be CONFERENCE 2008

May 28-30, Baltimore Convention Center Baltimore

Infrastructure is the structural foundation of our world’s civilization. Facing the now-critical imperative of sustainability, infrastructure professionals such as yourself bear a full load, and substantial backlog, of work to be done. At the same time, your numbers are not being sufficiently replenished by new entrants to the profession.

We believe that “working smarter” is the best response to this resource bottleneck. At BE Conference 2008, you can share best practices among peers who are working smarter through pragmatic innovations developed “organically” among Bentley users. That explains our theme: BEst Practices for Sustaining Infrastructure.

New format for Be Conference

Different from Be Conferences from years past, 2008 will include only minimal lecture-based learning from Bentley Institute – rather than hands-on training. In response, Bentley is embracing a new commitment to expanding its learning offerings that will increase users’ access to specialized learning content, regardless of their geographic location.

Generation Summit

Feb. 24-26, Château Élan Winery & Resort, Braselton, Ga.

This summit will highlight the strategies and practical realities of managing power generation fleets in today’s low-price, wholesale power environments. Maximizing power production from existing generation assets has never been more challenging. Many merchant energy companies have limited or nonexistent capital available for plant upgrades or new generation while regulated generating assets must compete for scarce capital and O&M dollars with the divisions of their parent companies. Optimizing plant performance with a limited budget demands new tools, technologies, and management practices. Strategies and tactics for generating profitability will be discussed at this summit.

Interoperability Will Be Achieved Through a Combination of Solutions Spurred by People and Technology

From a purely technology-based view, interoperability is the ability to manage and communicate electronic product and project data among collaborating firms. However, many build team members also see interoperability at a cultural level. Beyond the technology, interoperability is often defined as the ability to implement and manage collaborative relationships among members of cross-disciplinary build teams that enables integrated project execution.

Heritage Middle School Team Wins National Engineers Week Future City Finals

A city of the future, “RA,” engineered by students from Heritage Middle School in Westerville, Ohio, has won the 2008 National Engineers Week Future City Competition. The students – Glen Gainer, Emma Henderson, and Jeremy Boyd, all age 13 – teamed up with their teacher Debra Pellington and volunteer mentor, Ted Beidler, P.E., from the Franklin County Ohio Engineering Department. Teams from 36 middle schools nationwide, winners of regional competitions in January, participated in the Future City National Finals, Feb. 18-20 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington.

In the Future City Competition, working in teams with a teacher and volunteer engineer mentor, middle-school students create cities of the future, first on computer and then in large, tabletop models. They write a city abstract and an essay on using engineering to solve an important social need – this year’s essay asked students to describe how nanotechnology will monitor their city’s structures and systems to keep its infrastructure healthy. Then they presented and defended their cities before engineer judges at the competition. Some 30,000 students from more than 1,100 schools participated in 2007-08.

The Future City National Finals is hosted by Bentley, the chair of the competition’s Leadership Council. Bentley also provides the first prize for the Heritage team – a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. All regional winning teams received an all-expense-paid trip to Washington for the National Finals.

Managing BIM Technology in the Building Industry

Chuck Eastman, Paul Teicholz, Rafael Sacks and Kathleen Liston

Many organizations are now hiring employees with BIM-specific job titles such as BIM Specialist, BIM Champion, BIM Administrator, 4D Specialist, and Manager of Virtual Design and Construction. Owners may hire employees with these titles or find service providers that bear similar ones. The market is open with strong salaries for people with the needed backgrounds. However, the responsibilities that go with these titles are not yet well defined. Regardless of title, there is a strong need for more people with training and experience with creation and use of building models.

These positions are meant to help AEC firms make the transition from current practice to one that will be BIM savvy and integrate this technology into their organization. In this article we offer a perspective on these important positions and suggest their roles and responsibilities at the corporate and project levels within owner organizations and the AEC firms that serve them. It builds upon our reflections as co-authors of the
BIM Handbook: A Guide to Building Information Modeling for Owners, Managers, Designers, Engineers and Contractors, published by Wiley and available in the middle of February, 2008.

China Guangdong Nuclear Starts Up its First Wind Power Project in Northeastern China

BEIJING--February 28, 2008--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Phase I of the Dagangzi windfarm, the first wind power project of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, China), recently went into commercial operation in northeastern China's Jilin Province. The windfarm is located in Baicheng, an economic hub in the Nengjiang River Valley next to the border of the Ke'ergin Grassland with strong winds that blow in from Siberia.

The windfarm has a total planned capacity of 200 megawatts (MW). Phase I includes 33 wind turbines, and Phase II is expected to go into operation in June 2008. Upon completion, the project could sell about 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to the grid each year and help alleviate the area's power shortage. Compared to a conventional coal-fired power plant, the project could save more than 60,000 metric tons of standard coal and reduce the SO2 emissions by about 1,080 metric tons every year and about 45,000 metric tons of CO2 every year.

CGNPC has finalized its strategy to focus on nuclear power as its main business and wind power as its second business. CGNPC has other wind power projects, as well: Tenghuiliang windfarm (Inner Mongolia), Cabei windfarm (Hebei Province), Daliang windfarm (Gansu Province) and Taishan windfarm (Guangdong Province). These projects have a total capacity of more than 650 MW either under construction on in pre-stage preparation. CGNPC's total installed capacity of wind power is expected to reach 1,500 MW in 2010 and more than 7,000 MW in 2020.
