Generation Summit
Feb. 24-26, Château Élan Winery & Resort, Braselton, Ga.
This summit will highlight the strategies and practical realities of managing power generation fleets in today’s low-price, wholesale power environments. Maximizing power production from existing generation assets has never been more challenging. Many merchant energy companies have limited or nonexistent capital available for plant upgrades or new generation while regulated generating assets must compete for scarce capital and O&M dollars with the divisions of their parent companies. Optimizing plant performance with a limited budget demands new tools, technologies, and management practices. Strategies and tactics for generating profitability will be discussed at this summit.

Using nanotechnology to monitor city structures and systems in the Future City
Seventh- and eighth-graders in the annual National Engineers Week Future City Competition normally create cities with utopia in mind. This year, they’re also confronting the world’s worst urban disasters and there’s no mistaking them for utopia. From a small Kansas town destroyed last year by a tornado, to the war ravaged Gaza Strip, to Linfen, China, one of the most polluted cities on earth, Future City students across the country are dealing with real problems, determined to prevent them and build a better tomorrow. This year’s theme asks students to describe how nanotechnology will monitor their city’s structures and systems to keep its infrastructure healthy.

Infotech Enterprises Ltd.
British Telecom needed to deliver on an integrated, intelligent, network-based, physical inventory system. The goal was to achieve a full end-to-end model of network asset connectivity by using an automated system, Physical Inventory Planning eRecords (PIPeR). Infotech deployed a team of about 225 people (on-site and off-shore) for data conversion, data generation, data improvement, and backlog recovery. The project included conversions of duct plans and cable diagrams onto the PMA (plant on maps) using customized tools, and providing outputs in XML format to be migrated to the target GIS system.

Bentley news

Three acquisitions announced in January

On Jan. 22, we announced the acquisition of Hevacomp, based in England. Hevacomp is a leading provider of building services design software dedicated to improving the performance of buildings. Included in its portfolio is software for energy analysis, heating and cooling load calculations, pipe and duct sizing, and electrical system design and product catalogs. Hevacomp is at the forefront of simulation for building energy analyses, incorporating in its offerings the EnergyPlus engine, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, and software certified to perform CO2 emissions calculations required under Part L of the U.K. building regulations. This acquisition is important because the software we acquired will facilitate sustainable design by equipping building system engineers with rigorous tools to leverage building information model.

On Jan. 24, we announced the acquisition of LEAP Software. Leap is a leading provider of analysis and design products for concrete bridges. The LEAP bridge solutions are the industry standard across North America, used by 37 U.S. state departments of transportation, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, a large number of city and county agencies, and top bridge engineering consultants. LEAP software is a critical addition to our bridge portfolio as we focus our efforts on bridge information modeling, or BrIM. Through a concerted BrIM initiative, we will leverage intra-operations across these industry-leading solutions, enabling delivery of safer, better-engineered bridges and opening a door to improved deployment models for bridge construction, maintenance, operation, and rehabilitation.

CEO Greg Bentley announced on Jan. 28 at daratechPLANT2008 that, in addition to the acquisitions of Hevacomp and LEAP, Bentley has substantially completed the scope of its conceptual design offerings through the acquisition of ECT’s promise software, the leader in electrical control systems. The software addresses the need to automate and improve productivity of control system design and documentation workflows promise is an intelligent, easy-to-use software solution that generates electrical system schematics and supporting documentation, reducing electrical design time by more than 30 percent. The software runs on MicroStation, MicroStation PowerDraft, and AutoCAD and makes the electrical design process more accurate by virtue of more than 2 million parts in its uniquely comprehensive content repository. Among the diversity of original equipment manufacturers, electrical systems integrators, engineering/procurement/construction (EPC) firms, suppliers and vendors of electrical system components, and facility owners designing with promise are ABB, Procter & Gamble, Eaton, Solar Turbines, Duke Energy, Long Island Rail Road, and Siemens. The acquisition of promise complements and further extends Bentley’s comprehensive portfolio of software for the design and operation of electrical systems for process plants, factories, power generation, electric utilities, rail and transit, and more.
