MicroStation tips from Be Conference: Element clipping

These tips were presented at Be Conference 2007 in Los Angeles and Be Conference Europe in London by Jeanne Aarhus, Aarhus Associates, LLC.

Element clipping
Most of us continue to use a fence to clip reference files, and that has been an effective way to do this for years. But now there is another method using elements that offer additional capabilities that can easily be overlooked. Try it once and you’ll be hooked! Take a look at the following examples of how you can use elements rather than fences to clip those reference files.

Modify clip boundaries
Making modifications to the clipping boundary is much easier if an element is used to perform the clipping operation rather than a fence. Not only can you keep the element around for later use, you can also modify the element with additional options such as insert or delete vertex. If you don’t want the clipping element to plot, place it on a non-plotting level.

Pan References Behind the Clip Boundary
Using an element in a reference file for the clipping boundary gives you an additional reference file feature. You can “pan” the reference file behind the clipping boundary. Select the reference file you want to pan and use the MOVE command to move the reference file around behind the clipped element. Since the clipping element is in a reference file it will not move unless you select it to move with the other reference files.

Bentley tips

Plant tip: How to make Bentley View the default viewer in Document Manager in AutoPLANT XM Edition

1. Make sure that the latest XM version of Bentley View is installed.
2. Open the file AT.INI found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\Plant XM\CFG

3. Find the following heading in the file:

[Document Manager]

4. To make Bentley View the default viewer, add the following line to the end of that section:

AlwaysUseBentleyView=1

5. Save and close the file.
6. Open Document Manager.
7. Go to File->Viewer and FileType Setup
8. Click Add.
9. Create a new viewer with the following attributes:

Extension - DWG
Viewer - C:\Program Files\Bentley\View\BentleyView.exe (path to Bentley View executable – may vary)
Uncheck the box titled: Use Internal Viewer as Default.

10. Click Apply, then Set.

Now Bentley View will be used as the default viewer for all DWG files in Document Manager.

NOTE: The same steps can be applied to work in Vision as well by going to the [VISION] section in the AT.INI and by modifying the same settings inside the Vision application.

NOTE: Voloview version 3.0 can be used as well by using the following steps in place of those above:

In step four of the procedure above, to make Voloview the default viewer, add the following line to the end of the Document Manager section:

AlwaysUseVoloView=1

9. Make sure the Viewer path points to the Voloview executable.

ProjectWise tip: How to set ProjectWise to automatically check a file back in when you close it.

Are you tired of the Check In dialog box? Here’s how to skip it.

In the mcm.cfg file, uncomment the pwcheckinopt=1 variable.

#pwcheckinopt=1  - The default is to show the dialog box.
pwcheckinopt=1  -  Now when the users exits a file, ProjectWise will automatically check the file back in.

eSeminars Available From Integrated Structural Solutions Seminar
Bentley's Structural Engineering Group recently held a seminar on integrated structural solutions for plant applications in Houston. One of the attendees, James Yong, PE, SE with TechnipUSA, said, ”I was very impressed with the seminar. In fact, I am requesting that my company purchase RAM Connection and STAAD.foundation licenses after viewing the capabilities of the programs.”

The seminar highlighted the new version of STAAD.Pro, as well as the integration with RAM Connection and STAAD.foundation. The seminar demonstrated an integrated workflow for industrial structures utilizing STAAD.Pro 2007, STAAD.foundation and RAM Connection.

Bentley white papers

Making PDS Interoperable
In a recent survey taken by Bentley, 90 percent of users said the transition from PDS is important to them. However, only 28 percent said they had enough information to make a decision on which route to take.

This paper is intended to fill that information gap. It sets out options for PDS users to continue gaining value from their PDS systems, and to take an evolutionary approach toward a transition using the components of Bentley's DigitalPlant solution. It also provides information about future developments that will help users work out the timing of investments.

Managing PDS Documents Effectively
Failing to manage and track all the work-in-progress design files for the complete project makes the synchronization between distributed design teams virtually impossible, and can have disastrous consequences for the project. This white paper investigates the processes involved in managing PDS projects and makes recommendations for process improvements.

It's a cell! It's a design file! No! It's a model!
So, you've heard that MicroStation V8 supports the concept of multiple models contained within a single DGN file. But did you know that models are cell definitions and vice versa? That's right, MicroStation V8 makes no distinction between cells and models whatsoever!
