Justice Facilities Review 2008
The AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice invites all registered architects to submit projects that represent the state of the art in justice facility design. Justice Facilities Review 2008 offers an opportunity to put your firm’s jury-selected projects before administrators, architects, representatives of state and local jurisdictions, and others involved in the justice system.

A jury of architects and justice facilities administrators will screen entries. Selected projects will be published in the companion publication, Justice Facilities Review 2008, and featured in several traveling exhibits. Small firms (firms with five or fewer staff) are eligible to submit entries at a discounted rate. The AIA encourages architects to submit their design work for consideration. Entry forms are due Jan. 15, 2008.

Generation Summit
This summit will highlight the strategies and practical realities of managing power generation fleets in today’s low-price, wholesale power environments. Maximizing power production from existing generation assets has never been more challenging. Many merchant energy companies have limited or nonexistent capital available for plant upgrades or new generation while regulated generating assets must compete for scarce capital and O&M dollars with the divisions of their parent companies. Optimizing plant performance with limited budgets demands new tools, technologies, and management practices. Strategies and tactics for generating profitability will be discussed at this summit.

European Nuclear Forum 2008

March 10-11, Brussels

The outlook for nuclear power in Europe is increasingly positive. Changes in the energy market wrought by climate change challenges, the increasing costs of fossil fuel generation, and advances in decommissioning and waste management are converging to make the prospect of a nuclear renaissance increasingly probable. However, the industry must forge the right strategies if the future security and profitability of the sector is to be ensured.

The Adam Smith Institute’s European Nuclear Forum will again bring together senior decision makers from across the sector to discuss the issues shaping the industry. Bentley users receive a 15 percent discount on conference fees.

Leaving Data and Money on the Table
For all the data and information created and developed during the design and construction of a building, very little of it is used in the operation and management of the building. Adopting Building Information Management (BIM) can make that information useful, but there are a handful of things that can be done beforehand.

Blackfriars Road

Ian Simpson Architects

One Blackfriars Road is a new landmark building in London containing a 375-bedroom six-star hotel, 120 residential apartments, and a publicly accessible sky deck. These elements are integrated into a slender, sculptural, 65-story tower and six-story podium building that frame a landscaped plaza. The firm’s integrated workflow – which allows parametric design, visualization studies, and fully coordinated 3D design to be handled within one environment –was vital to the success of the project.

Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and Bentley Inspector Stakeout Implementation

The project was to automate and simplify inspection and stakeout functions using mobile devices. Machine control minimizes staking, making traditional inspection more difficult, so GPS systems were integrated with mobile software to solve the problem. Pilot projects in which inspectors used GPS systems were completed in 2005. Interfacing with GPS equipment, using wireless equipment, and adding data collection expanded the concept into first-generation production software.
