BRIEF

Organization:                 RITES Ltd.

Project Name:              Design of the New Jubilee Bridge

Category:
Civil Structural Analysis, Design, and Documentation

Category Description: Creative and effective uses of information-based approaches in the structural engineering process. Of particular interest are projects in which analysis, design and documentation of the structural system were integrated.

Originally constructed in 1887, the Jubilee Bridge provides an important railway link across the river Hooghly. Although it is still operational, the bridge has severe speed restrictions so Eastern Railway planned to construct a new one. It commissioned RITES to carry out the detailed studies and recommend a location for the New Jubilee Bridge.

RITES designed a 415.6-meter three-span rail bridge with continuous superstructure used for the first time at Indian Railways. The cost of the bridge including substructure is approximately $30 million. RITES used Bentley’s STAAD.Pro for analysis of the bridge superstructure and MXRAIL for alignment. These tools provided an efficient and robust analysis engine whose visualization tools, user-friendly interface, and customized report generation efficiently modeled the superstructure model.
