Bentley’s Gus Bergsma Receives American Institute of Steel Construction Special Achievement Award

03 April 2008

Recognized for Pioneering Work Promoting Advanced Structural Steel Design Product That Helped Revolutionize Computerized Design of Structural Steel Buildings

EXTON, Pa. – Gus Bergsma, vice president of global sales, Bentley Structural Engineering Group, has received the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Special Achievement Award. The award, which was presented at the 2008 NASCC: The Steel Conference, in Nashville, Tenn., honors individuals who have made a positive and substantial impact on the structural steel design and construction industry. Bergsma was recognized for his work promoting software in Bentley’s RAM Structural System that empowers structural engineers to analyze, design, and create structural drawings of the gravity load-resisting members in steel buildings.

Scott Melnick, vice president of the AISC, said, “On behalf of the board of directors of the AISC, I congratulate Gus on being among the select group of forward-thinking professionals to receive this recognition since the award’s inception in 1999. The AISC Special Achievement Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated notable achievements in structural steel design, construction, research, or education. We are honoring Gus for his pioneering work in promoting an advanced solution to structural steel design that has helped revolutionize the computerized design of structural steel buildings.”

Commenting on the award, Bergsma said, “I am very honored by this award and accept it on behalf of my many colleagues formerly with RAM International who are now in the Bentley Structural Engineering Group. Their innovative work and dedication helped make RAM the leading software for, among other things, structural steel analysis and design. I look forward to advancing RAM’s features and capabilities at Bentley through continued innovation, and sincerely believe the best is yet to come for the analysis, design, and construction of steel buildings.”

Bergsma began his career as a structural engineer with Culp & Turner in Southern California. He later became co-owner of RAM International and was named a Bentley vice president when RAM was acquired by Bentley in 2005. Bergsma holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a licensed Professional Engineer.
