URS Corporation
Stockholm Bypass, FSK06 Akalla - Häggvik Design Contract
Stockholm, Sweden

The Stockholm Bypass is a new motorway link to the western reaches of Stockholm, Sweden. The URS/ÅF AB consortium was awarded the Akalla/Häggvik interchange contract by Trafikverket, which encompasses the north end of the 3-kilometer surface section of the bypass. It includes 27 road alignments over 22 kilometers with 11 bridges, complex water and drainage systems, and complicated electrical and ducting networks.

Several challenging 3D and BIM-related procedures were mandated on this SEK 28 billion project. URS used MicroStation, MXROAD, InRoads, PowerCivil for Sweden, and ProjectWise to create and manage intelligent multi-discipline 3D models. Each discipline published a fully referenced i-model that enabled clash detection across the entire project. Using 3D modeling, they hope to reduce drafting hours by 30 percent and the number of drawing needed by 90 percent.

Bergmann Associates
NYS Route 17 at Exit 122
Wallkill, New York, United States

Bergmann Associates developed the interchange designs for NYS Route 17 at Exit 122, an interchange reconstruction and realignment project that includes new and reconstructed bridges. The USD 68.5 million NYSDOT project will correct sharp curves on ramps, the close proximity of exit and entrance ramps that contributes to a high accident rate, vehicular delays at the ramp terminals, and a steep grade on the local road as it passes over Route 17.

Using MicroStation and InRoads, Bergmann’s design team developed complex horizontal and vertical alignments to minimize impacts to environmentally sensitive areas in Walkill, New York. The project earned the Evergreen award through the Green Leadership in Transportation and Environmental Sustainability program, which honors environmental excellence in transportation projects. ProjectWise managed file sharing and coordination.

Hanson Professional Services Inc.
Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) Widening and Reconstruction
Boone, McHenry, and Kane Counties, Illinois, United States

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority selected Hanson Professional Services to design the reconstruction and widening of a 22-mile section of Interstate 90 west of Chicago from Illinois 47 to Genoa Road. Because the Hanson team included three firms as major partners and four other design firms as significant subconsultants, effectively managing communications, files, and deliverables was crucial for this USD 245 million project.

The project team, consisting of members from more than 13 offices, utilized MicroStation, GEOPAK, and ProjectWise. They used ProjectWise to fulfill the requirement of a sophisticated yet user-friendly document management system that would keep the large, diverse project team and client connected. Bentley design software and the easy file access provided by ProjectWise allowed the Hanson team to meet the aggressive schedule.
