Hatch Associates Limited
Pueblo Viejo
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
The primary goal of the Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic is to design and build facilities for extraction and processing of gold from an ore body at a throughput rate of 24,000 tons per day. Hatch’s involvement in this project was to create the first chemical process step in the extraction of gold.
The available space for this facility was tight due to rugged terrain and demanded the most compact layout possible while providing maintenance access and safe operation. PlantSpace and other Bentley products allowed all disciplines to work simultaneously while sharing design information on a real-time basis. The 3D environment developed a layout, general arrangements, and isometric drawings by extraction; imported terrain maps, structural steel, and concrete models; and produced integrated models for design reviews, presentations, and clash detection.

New Tripper 2A at Saldanha Iron Ore Ship Loading Facility
Saldanha, South Africa
The design and construction of a new tripper at the iron ore ship loading facility at Saldanha Bay ensured the continued ability to export iron ore from South Africa, critical since this facility is the sole export point of iron ore. Because of the structural failure of old tripper 2a during the planned decommissioning of tripper 1a, the swift rebuild of tripper 2a was the main objective of this project.
Using Bentley technologies, Hatch was able to combine the design and engineering phases of the project. The animation of the construction sequence assisted in carefully planning the construction of the equipment and was invaluable in meeting the schedule. Without the import and animation capabilities of MicroStation, the construction study could not have been completed in time and critical schedule enhancements would not have been made.

Sistema MMX Minas -- Rio
Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil
One of the most ambitious projects in Brazil and the largest enterprise implemented by MMX, the Minas-Rio System will ensure an efficient export corridor for center-west and southeast Brazil, spurring the nation's economic growth. This project is particularly noteworthy for its vast reserves in Minas Gerais State, which may hold up to 2 billion tons of iron ore, all of which will be transported by the world's largest ore pipeline.
Due to the size of the project -- the system is comprised of the mine, benefit plant, slurry pipeline, benefit plant at the port, and the port -- MMX needed to subcontract several EPCs and equipment providers, supplying hundreds of thousands of files to MMX engineers. ProjectWise was customized for these special needs and provided MMX with all the tools needed to coordinate and control the vast information flow.
