RAM Structural System’s Productivity Tool for Lateral Analysis and Design

Tips and Tricks
  • Tension-only braces can be specified and analyzed. Load cases and load combinations can be generated considering that the analyses involve tension-only braces.

  • Foundation springs can be assigned to the bases of columns and walls.

  • Second order, P-Delta effects may be ignored using the option under Criteria - General within RAM Frame.

  • The ground level may be set in RAM Frame. This level, and all levels below, is assumed to be laterally supported by the earth, and no lateral loads are applied to these levels as a result.

  • Many of the reports in RAM Frame can be printed for specific frames once frame numbers are assigned to the model.

  • If there are no masses defined in a model, then the program cannot analyze many different types of loads. This is indicated as a red light when performing Process - Analyze

  • By creating a load case in RAM Frame using the Center of Rigidity option, you can display the center of rigidity along with the center of mass location on-screen.

  • Drift results are only given at points within a rigid diaphragm in RAM Frame. The nodal displacements report can be used for other points.

  • A dynamic load case in RAM Frame, using the "Eigensolution" option, is required to review the mode shapes graphically.

  • The Sidesway and K Factor criteria in RAM Frame - Steel mode are used in conjunction to determine the K factors for lateral columns (and other members).

  • The load combinations created in the various modes of RAM Frame are used within that specific mode only.

  • In order to perform the seismic provisions code check, the various lateral members must first be assigned a frame type, using the command, Assign - Frame Type within the RAM Frame - Steel - Seismic Provisions Mode

  • A virtual load case must be created in RAM Frame - Analysis mode before a virtual work analysis can be performed. Walls are meshed in RAM Frame before starting analysis and wall mesh density can be controlled by the Criteria-General-Wall Mesh command. Meshed walls can be displayed on screen by View-Meshed Walls command.

  • The shear wall forces module can be used to obtain forces at any user-defined horizontal or vertical section-cuts on walls. The module can be run after analysis completed by Process-Results-Shear Wall Forces Module command.

  • Diaphragm slab edges can be displayed on screen by View - Diaphragm Slab Edges command.
