Overview

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping offers similar functionality to Bentley Map. It was designed for organizations that:

  • Have a desire to develop stand-alone third party GIS applications as a member of the Bentley Developer Network
  • Wish to implement a workflow or application that does not need the advanced 3D visualization and animation power of MicroStation or to run other Bentley applications.

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping is an easy-to-use mapping application. It is highly customizable and uses the same XML Feature Modeling (XFM) platform as Bentley Map.

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping provides a rich 2D or 3D map production environment. You can work in DGN or DWG files, natively read and reference SHP file formats, and import a wide range of industry-standard raster and vector file formats.

 

To assist your production workflows, a range of topological analysis tools are available. Like Bentley Map, the topology model is based on, but does not require, the Oracle Spatial topology model.  Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping offers all the same topological analysis and spatial operations found in Bentley Map.  Because Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping and Bentley Map are based on the same code base, they share many of the same features and functions including:

  • The intuitive Map Manager
  • XML feature modeling
  • Geospatial Administrator
  • Oracle Spatial editing
  • On-the-fly or on-demand topology
  • Spatial analysis and presentation
  • Map generation and print preparation
  • Map projection and coordinate conversion
  • High performance display of industry standard image formats
  • Interoperability with other GIS formats including ESRI, MapInfo, and more
  • A robust development platform.

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping also provides for a choice of several persistent data stores. You can choose the one that’s right for the job and your organization:

  • A two-tier connection to Oracle Spatial
  • A three-tier connection to Oracle Spatial
    (Requires the Bentley Geospatial Server)
  • A three-tier connection to ArcGIS
    (Requires the Bentley Geospatial Server and ArcGIS Connector)
  • Self-contained “XFM” DGN files
  • Any RDBMS/DGN supported by MicroStation

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping works with self-contained, intelligent DGN files with embedded properties and metadata, standard DGNs and a two-tier direct connection with any relational database supported by MicroStation, or a two-tier configuration with a direct connection to Oracle Spatial. Enterprise connections, enabled by the Bentley Geospatial Server, work directly with Oracle Spatial or ArcGIS.

The self-contained DGN files are ideal for users and applications that require “disconnected” use, while the database options allow you to easily integrate Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping into virtually any IT environment.

Third Party GIS Development Platform

Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping is the perfect development platform for third party developers who wish to create stand-alone applications. It provides most of the robust capabilities found in MicroStation and Bentley Map in a single, economical product. Bentley PowerDraft for Mapping will run a single run-time application developed by you and signed by Bentley. As a member of BDN, you have access to even more advanced development tools and special support and training programs.
