Driving Construction Industry Change Using BS1192

Bentley is sure you are already aware of the many industry challenges faced in the current climate of austerity: the issues of decreasing workloads, increased competition for the projects that continue, pressure to reduce margins, and unpredictable cash flow. Other factors are also surfacing that may even impact your organisation's ability to bid successfully for government lead projects.

Bentley and the UK Government believe that a significant way to address these issues is by working in a more coordinated and collaborative manner. Furthermore, Bentley held a high-level industry event in London on 28 February 2011 to profile working collaboratively as a way to achieve gains in efficiency and competiveness for your organisation.

Through an awareness of BS 1192, a British Standard that establishes the methodology for managing the production, distribution, and quality of construction information and supporting technologies, attendees:

  • Learned about the key issues facing the construction industry and underlining the need for change
  • Discovered how these issues can be addressed by working collaboratively
  • Heard an overview of BS 1192 directly from one of its authors
  • Left understanding UK Government procurement initiatives and likely consequences to competitive tendering
  • Listened to case studies of BS 1192’s application and results from a consultant, contractor, and owner-operator perspective
  • Took away pragmatic ways in which the standard can be supported using "out of the box" technology from Bentley for the design and construction of rail, road, bridges, and the built environment
  • Found out how the supply chain can engage with collaborative projects and technology
  • Accrued 4.5 Learning Units - Bentley’s equivalent to professional development hours*

All presentations on the day were recorded and are now available online for you and colleagues to view at your leisure.

  • Phil Jackson, Chair of ICE Information Systems Panel
  • Mervyn Richards, MD MR1 Consulting, co-author of BS 1192
  • Malcolm Taylor, Head of Technical Support Services, Crossrail
  • Andrew Wolstenholme, Director of Innovation and Strategic Capability Balfour Beatty
  • Chris Penn, Group BIM IPD Director, URS/Scott Wilson

There is no charge to view the presentations. All we ask is that you provide a minimum amount of information in advance, before we provide access to streamed versions of the presentations.
