When the Belgian government commissioned the International Polar Foundation (IPF) to design and construct a new, zero-emission, environmentally friendly research station in Antarctica, the IPF first considered an all-steel design. While the foundation is constructed of a special steel ideal for cold-weather conditions, using an all-steel design proved too constraining and could lead to considerable thermal loss.

Instead, the project team opted for a wooden skin building that would prevent any part of the steel from being exposed to the outside elements. The team also designed a monitoring system to measure and record the station’s environmental impact, including emissions, fuel spills, and waste output. Prefalux deployed Bentley products to create 3D models of the station and generated all drawings using TriForma for on-time project delivery.
