One of the many challenges the city of Gdansk, Poland, faced in the late 1980’s was development of its infrastructure. In 1999, in response to that need, and in light of Poland’s impending accession into the European Union (achieved in 2004), the City Council of Gdansk set up the Gdansk Development Agency (BRG). Its aim was to create local urban plans to ensure sustainable development for Gdansk and its 500,000 residents. With 98 employees, 60 of which are architects and urban planners, BRG is the largest urban planning agency in Poland.
